I tried this but couldn't get on the lamp. Maybe I'm missing something.

When the map is played, ask in the chat and be sure to get help.
You can also try it without bots on the 24/7 rats server (EU2) in version 1.3.

I finally got onto the top of the lamp. I kept falling off when going up the ladder after that, but that just means I need more practice. Thank you Terminator for the secret.

You keep falling off the ladder because there are two ladders there. In the middle, you need to press "D" once to move right to the other ladder:
